Over the last couple of years, 8BitDo has expanded into the PC peripherals market with keyboards and mice that have been inspired by vintage video game consoles like the NES. For its next keyboard, the company is looking back to a more recent era and taking design cues from one of the coolest-looking consoles of all time: The transparent green Xbox. The eye-catching Xbox-themed 8BitDo Retro 87 TKL keyboard releases alongside a matching Retro R7 wireless mouse mouse on January 16, 2025, and you can preorder both at Amazon.
8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition
$120 | Releases January 16
8BitDo Retro 87 TKL Mechanical Keyboard
8BitDo’s Retro 87 TKL Xbox edition keyboard was designed in partnership with Xbox, and it sports several touches that call back to Microsoft’s first home gaming console, including a translucent green plastic shell and directional keys sporting the same colors as the Xbox controller face buttons. There’s also an integrated Xbox button for pulling up the Xbox overlay menu on Windows. Like 8BitDo’s other console-inspired mechanical keyboards, the Retro 87 TKL comes with two big, customizable microswitch buttons in the same style as the keyboard.
The Retro 87 also features RGB lighting and will be compatible with Windows and Android devices via 2.4GHz and Bluetooth wireless connectivity or wired USB-C. A free month of PC Game Pass is also included in the box. You can preorder the Retro 87 TKL mechanical keyboard at Amazon.
8BitDo Retro R8 Mouse with Charging Dock – Xbox Edition
$60 | Releases January 16
8Bitdo Retro R8 mouse
8BitDo is also launching the wireless Retro R8 Xbox Edition mouse, which sports a matching Xbox-inspired visual design as the Retro 87 keyboard. It sports an ambidextrous design with four additional programmable buttons–two on either side of the mouse. Like the Retro 87’s directional keys, the Retro R8’s extra buttons match the colors of the Xbox controller’s face buttons. You can connect use the mouse on Windows or Android devices wirelessly via Bluetooth or 2.4G wireless, or through wired USB-C connections. The mouse ships with a charging dock and includes a one-month subscription to PC Game Pass. Preorders are available now at Amazon.
In case you’d prefer a different design, several other 8BitDo TKL keyboards are on sale for Black Friday. The company has several designs, like the NES-inspired N Edition, the Famicom-inspired Fami Edition, and the Commodore 64-themed C64 Edition. These are all TKL models, meaning they lack the numpad of a full-size keyboard–but if you find yourself missing those extra keys, 8BitDo sells numpad add-ons for these keyboards. That said, if you’d prefer a more all-in-one solution, the company will be rolling out full-sized versions of the N Edition and Fami Edition keyboards on December 12, which you can preorder at Amazon.
As for alternative mouse options, 8BitDo also makes an NES-inspired N30 wireless mouse with buttons and a D-pad that look identical to the inputs on the NES gamepad. It’s on sale for $19.80 (normally $30) at Amazon.
