Hideo Kojima and his Kojima Productions team recently unveiled a lot of new footage and details for Death Stranding 2: On The Beach at Tokyo Game Show, and Kojima also said he knows the game’s release date. Unfortunately for fans, though, he isn’t going to announce it until 2025.
“I haven’t said the release date today, but the release date has already been decided, and I’m currently working on it in preparation for that,” he said at TGS, as reported by VGC. He confirmed that the Death Stranding 2 release date will be announced “at some point” in 2025.
“Due to some unforeseen circumstances, we cannot announce it today,” he said. The developer did not elaborate as to what those circumstances might be.
Kojima is good friends with Geoff Keighley, who runs The Game Awards each December. Some had speculated that Kojima could reveal the game’s release date there, but it seems that won’t be the case, though of course plans can always change. The game was previously announced for a 2025 release.
Death Stranding 2 will be exclusive on console to PlayStation, as part of Kojima’s partnership with the company. In addition to Death Stranding 2, Kojima productions is working on a Death Stranding movie with A24, along with multiple other games, including the Xbox-exclusive OD and the espionage game Physint.
The original Death Stranding came out in 2019 and was polarizing. It is a strange journey into extinction anchored by the performances of Hollywood stars such as Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen, among others. The sequel, much like the first game, looks unique and odd. You can check out the newest gameplay footage in the video above.
