Balatro creator LocalThunk said that they have put it in measures to prevent the game from becoming a real gambling game, even after their death.

“From the outside this might make 0 sense but I hate the thought of Balatro becoming a true gambling game so much that when I recently created my will I stipulated that the Balatro IP may never be sold or licensed to any gambling company/Casino,” they posted on Twitter.

Earlier this year, Balatro was actually pulled from European storefronts due to unfounded worries that the game actually promoted gambling. Balatro has become a huge hit, selling more than one million copies in its first month.

LocalThunk is also teasing an update to Balatro, which seems like it’ll be revealed tomorrow. The teaser just shows three cards face down, so it’s a bit difficult to discern what the announcement could possibly be–perhaps a mobile port or new Joker cards added in as DLC.

In GameSpot’s Balatro review, we said, “Balatro’s ingenious combination of poker and roguelite gameplay creates an intoxicating combination that’s hard to pull away from.”
