Mojang Studios has announced that a native PlayStation 5 version of Minecraft is releasing today and it is looking for preview testers. Those who own the PS4 version of the game will be able to access it.
In order to test this early version on PS5, users just need to go into the PS4 version of the game, click “Settings” and then click “Preview.” The preview is set to roll out at around 9:30 AM PT / 12:30 PM ET. Mojang also clarified that purchasing the PS4 version is currently the only way to play the PS5 version, and the reason for creating a native PS5 version is that it would run more smoothly on its hardware.
This preview includes the new Tricky Trials update as well. Here, players can either team up or go solo to venture into a maze filled with traps and treasures. Furthermore, in this preview, multiplayer is only available between PS4 and PS5 and there is no access to the Minecraft Store.
Last year, Minecraft was rated in Germany for the Xbox Series X|S, the first sign that the game would be coming to current consoles. During the FTC trial regarding Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Xbox blamed the lack of a native PS5 version of Minecraft on Sony at the time. Microsoft said that Sony didn’t send any development kits ahead of the console’s release in 2020.
