Batman: Arkham Shadow returns us to the legendary Arkham universe, this time exclusively on Meta Quest 3, and the new VR game got its first story trailer during Summer Game Fest Live. In the trailer, we head back to Gotham City.
“There’s a new darkness overtaking Gotham–driving the city mad,” Bruce Wayne says in the official trailer. “The only light left is from the fire in the streets casting shadows of rats on everything that was once good.”
We see mention of a “Rat King” at the police station, with Commissioner Gordon clearly very frustrated about his lack of progress on the case. The trailer is set to an instrumental cover of “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” by The Smashing Pumpkins, and despite all his rage, Gordon can’t put that rat in a cage.
“When the bat falls, the rats rise,” a voice says as the trailer ends.
Batman: Arkham Shadow is the first Batman: Arkham game to release since Batman: Arkham VR in 2016, which initially launched exclusively on PSVR. The same universe was the setting for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a follow-up live-service action game from developer Rocksteady that underperformed. Prior to this, the last full-length Arkham game was Batman: Arkham Knight, which wrapped up the Caped Crusader’s story, to a degree, in appropriately climactic fashion.
Arkham Shadow will launch exclusively for Meta Quest 3 this fall.
