Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Complete Series
While it might look like a regular monster-of-the-week mecha anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion quickly evolves into something entirely different. Sure, the cataclysmic battles between the EVA units and the Angels threatening humanity with extinction look great, but throw in an examination of life, downright depressing moments in the story, sinister plots in the background, and high-level intellectual debates, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for an anime series that raised the bar for the medium.
Those themes from the 26-episode TV series are explored further in the two accompanying films. The first film, Death (True), is essentially a recap of the events of the series and contains content from the second film. End of Evangelion. This film serves as an ending to the television series, remaking the final two controversial episodes to provide a more definitive ending. The soundtrack is also full of memorable tunes, and you can grab a deluxe vinyl version of it with a very cool cover for $34.50 at Amazon.
