Making caviar in Stardew Valley requires a few more steps than it might seem. Creating this artisan good requires a specific type of fish and a preserved jar. Similar to other artisan goods in Stardew Valley, caviar is worth more than the product it’s made from, and it has other uses as well, like being a popular gift. Caviar is also used for the movie theater bundle, which is unlocked after completing one of the main storylines.

How to make caviar

Sturgeon in a fish pond have a chance to produce roe every day.

Caviar is made by putting sturgeon roe in a preserves jar. While you can age any roe you obtain in a preserves jar, only sturgeon roe turns into caviar. There are two ways to obtain sturgeon roe, only one of which consistently produces it.

The first method is to put a sturgeon into a fish pond, where it will produce sturgeon roe semi-regularly. To build a fishing pond, you need to take 200 stones, 5 seaweed, 5 green algae, and 5,000G to the Carpenter, who will take three days to build the fish pond. After that you need to catch a sturgeon, which are only available during summer and winter. Place the sturgeon into the pond.

The pond will start with only one sturgeon, and to reproduce, you will need to complete quests for the fish pond by bringing the requested items. The more sturgeon are in the pond, the higher the chance of producing roe each day is.

The quests appear every few days once the max number of fish is present.

The quests are:

1 sturgeon – 1 diamond3 sturgeons – 1 jelly or 1 pickle or 2 maple syrup5 sturgeons – 3 omni geodes7 sturgeons – 1 nautilus shell

If you get a treasure chest while catching a sturgeon there is a chance for it to contain sturgeon roe, but this requires you to get lucky with a treasure chest while catching a sturgeon and there is only a chance it could contain roe.

With your sturgeon roe, place it into a preserves jar. Preserves jars can be crafted at farming level 4 50 wood, 40 stone, and 8 coal. It takes a little over four days in-game for the sturgeon roe to be aged into caviar.
