While late manga creator Akira Toriyama is best-known for Dragon Ball, the famed illustrator also produced several other terrific series throughout his lifetime. One of them, Sand Land, was recently adapted into a video game, and in case you’ve been waiting for it to go on special, your patience has paid off. At Amazon, you can get the game for $40 on PS5, while the Xbox Series X version will cost you a few bucks more at $43.40.

Released in April, Sand Land is an open-world action-RPG with a heavy emphasis on vehicular combat and traversal. It’s an incredibly faithful recreation of Toriyama’s unique art, right down to the wonderfully detailed vehicles and quirky characters you’ll encounter throughout your adventure. As the pink-skinned demon prince, Beelzebub, players have to navigate through a desert world where water is in short supply and the realms of magic and sci-fi have become intertwined.
While combat can become monotonous and vehicle customization could be better, Sand Land still captures the charm of the original manga with its fascinating cast well-layered storytelling. “Sand Land is bittersweet in many ways, but it’s a testament to Toriyama’s talents as both an artist and storyteller that, despite its numerous flaws, it’s still worth playing,” Richard Wakeling wrote in GameSpot’s Sand Land review.
If you’re interested in checking out the original manga, you can grab it for just $12. Originally released in 2000, the Sand Land story is actually pretty short and consists of 14 chapters, making for a nice afternoon read.
